I have been musically inclined for as long
as I can remember. When I was 8 or 9 years old, I remember taking a stack of
CD’s up to my parents’ room and listening to them for hours. I begged to play
piano and was super excited when my parents told me I could start lessons at
age 10.
So I’ve played piano for 9 years now! I
love finding new pieces to play, and I’m at the point where there isn’t too
much that I can’t play with some practice. I love learning songs to share with
others! I took lessons until we moved to Texas, and then took about a 9-month
break until we found a new teacher. I took piano lessons for one semester, but
then had to stop once I started my college studies. I just didn’t have time to
practice as much as was necessary. So now I just play for pleasure, or
sometimes on the worship team at church!
About 4 or 5 years ago, I picked up the
guitar and learned a bit. I tried to teach myself some chords, but as soon as
my fingers started to hurt I would stop. I played off and on for several years.
But in January 2014, I picked it up and decided I was going to play through the
pain until my fingers blistered. I made sure to play every day and picked lots
of new songs to work on.
The guitar has become a wonderful
stress-reliever for me. In fact, my family can tell when I’m getting stressed
because I pick up the guitar for awhile. J
I just keep learning new chords gradually and building my song repertoire.
One of my goals is to learn the violin one
day! I just need to ac
quire one first. J
I would love to know what instruments you
play? Or what you would like to learn? Leave me a comment!

It's sorta funny how I when I first started piano it was a required course (my mom taught all of us) and I HATED it! Now I enjoy it and am glad she worked through my tears at each and every lesson! It has been a little bit difficult for me to learn how to read music (I'm still not fully there and I started when I was around 8). I'm naturally inclined to play by ear which makes it easy for me to hear a song and just go over to the piano (or any other instrument) and play it. I have a harder time if you give me a sheet to look at but I'm getting there. ;) And playing by ear is not all bad! Because of it I can very easily pick up pretty much any instrument and start playing a song on it. Thus my following list of instruments that I can "play" is not saying I have actually had lessons in all of them. ;) Piano, guitar, violin (fiddle ;), recorder, harp, and percussion are some that I've either had lessons for or just messed around with. :) Needless to say, music is now my favorite subject. :D The only thing I can remember always liking musically (even when I hated piano ;) is voice. I love to sing! I've recently begun reading through a singing book we have and working on voice training exercises. My mom is helping me some as well (she has a musical history in college and such). The main reason I started doing it was because I have my first singing competition on June 5th, 2014! Hopefully it will go well and whether or not I get 1st place I hope I bring glory and honor to the Lord! I'm interested in maybe learning tin-wistle and cello one day. We'll see. ;)
Keep on practicing and I'm sure you'll excell! If you want to watch a pianist who I admire (and you may have heard of) I'd reccommend Erin Bates (now Erin Paine). She actually has a few CD's out too!
Anyway, I hope you and your family are well! Have a blessed week!
In Christ,
Alexis
It sounds like God has really blessed you with musical abilities, Alexis! :-D I would love to learn how to play more instruments. I have heard Erin play piano before, and she's incredible!
